VAT on Adult Colouring Books?
Posted on 3rd March 2017 at 10:29
In the past few years there has been an interest in adult colouring books. They have become a new trend as a calming activity for the mind.
HMRC picked up on this growth of interest last year and questioned whether these books should be subject to 20% VAT instead of zero rate.
Although HMRC have recently announced they will accept that adult colouring or dot-to-dot books qualify as zero-rated, unless one of the following applies:
• Marked as suitable for adults or grown-ups;
• Help out for sale in retail shops together with other adult books that are unsuitable for children or not marked appropriate for children when for sale on a website;
• Contains images reflecting profanity, pornography, violence and illegal acts.
